Active working groups

Log data working group

Active since August 2023

What does the working group do?

In the working group, Research Data Centers, researchers and data providers exchange information on the provision and archiving of log data. Log data includes process data and log events that are collected and stored during technology-based surveys. The working group deals with conceptual, legal, technical and documentary issues. It deals with questions such as what type of log data should be provided and what effects on declarations of consent should be considered? The working group is open and interested parties from outside the VerbundFDB are always welcome.

AG Cessation

Active since February 2023

What does the working group do?

What are the consequences if an RDC ceases operations or no longer offers individual services? This can happen, for example, if the funding of an RDC expires or due to shifts in institutional responsibilities and related reorganizations. The aim of every RDC is to guarantee continuous access to the data and metadata for which it is responsible even beyond its own existence. To this end, preparations are made for the transfer of digital objects and services to other repositories, known as succession planning.

In the Cessation WG, several RDCs discuss the topic of succession aiming to develop a joint checklist to provide guidance for RDCs. The working group also aims to raise awareness of the topic and make it easier to get started. The working group deals with questions of data transfer and transfer of the archiving task as well as with aspects of the continuation of services by other repositories in order to ensure continued data usability after an RDC is dissolved or transferred..

Working group on data preparation automation

Active since 2022

What does the working group do?

Data scientists and data stewards from various Research Data Centers exchange information on the possibilities of automating data preparation, data checking and documentation processes. Furthermore, technical challenges that arise in the context of data preparation are discussed. Topics include automated checks of value tables and missing tags, spell checking, ensuring replicability of data preparation, and handling encoding issues. The working group is open and interested parties are always welcome.

Metadata working group

Active since 2017

What does the working group do?

In the Metadata Working Group, RDC representatives are working to harmonize the metadata sets and schemas of different RDCs. The aim is to to ensure a consistently high level of quality. On the other hand, an automatic import of metadata from the various RDCs into the forschungsdaten-bildung.de portal via technical interfaces. This will enable educational researchers to find data in one central location, regardless of where they are archived.

Completed working groups

Active from 2022 to 2024.

What does the working group do?

The working group develops workflows and criteria for various levels of curation and archiving services. The aim is to enable projects to provide research data from their surveys more quickly and independently via standardized channels of the VerbundFDB. This will be achieved through standardized submission of datasets to VerbundFDB and efficient integration of GESIS basic services. In addition to enabling time-efficient data provision, the capacities of VerbundFDB and its participating partners will be expanded.

What does the working group do?

An editorial group for a JOPD Special Issue was formed from the members. The Data Papers present various datasets from the field of educational research that are relevant to psychological research. The articles will be published continuously in 2023. The issue will feature data from well-known studies such as NEPS and PIAAC, as well as lesser-known studies from both within and outside Germany.

Active in 2021.

What does the working group do?

In the working group, the participating RDCs exchanged information about their procedures and experiences in recording publications by secondary users. Publications based on data use are an important indicator of data use, its output and impact. However, tracking these publications is often difficult and time-consuming in practice. The exchange resulted in a joint publication.

What does the working group do?

If the Research Data Center and researchers agree to archive the project data, they define their mutual rights and obligations in a data usage agreement, general terms and conditions, or licenses. The specific written form of the terms of use varies by Research Data Center and institution. In order to standardize these, the working group compiles corresponding formulation examples in the form of modular text modules. These can be individually compiled as required. In this way, Research Data Centers receive formulation aids for the contract’s subject matter, rights and obligations, and final provisions. The text modules support Research Data Centers in defining specifications and regulations as part of their data provision processes, in developing their own terms of use, or in adapting existing ones.
