VerbundFDB – the Network

In the VerbundFDB (German Network of Educational Research Data), institutions from the field of educational research work together to improve access to research data for educational research. The network runs the portal forschungsdaten-bildung.de, which combines offers for educational research.

Our goals, our services

We create visibility of research data.

Our data search functionality allows you to find research data from various data centres and repositories.

We ensure that research data is preserved.

Research data is archived at a data centre that is suitable in terms of content and methodology. By archiving, we comply with ethical, data protection, copyright and documentary standards.

We provide support for research data management.

We provide information on research data management topics by on-site training, digital training and information offers, and handouts. We offer individual advice on project-specific questions.

We are networked.

The VerbundFDB works in close partnership with KonsortSWD and is part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI).

Our partners

In the FDB network, 13 institutions from the field of educational research are working together to improve access to research data for educational research.

These institutes are the RDC at BIBB, the DIE, the FD-LEX at the Mercator Institute, the FDZ-DJI, the FDZ-DZHW, the FDZ-LIfBi, the Research Data Center at IQB, the Research Data Center at ZPID, the Research Data Centre for Education at DIPF, the Research Data Center PIAAC at GESIS, QualiBi and Qualiservice.

On this page, we introduce our partners in more detail:

Our history

The FDB network was established and expanded in three project phases funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Since 2022, the FDB network has been permanently financed as an infrastructure for educational research.

First funding phase from 2013 to 2016

The aim of the first funding phase was to raise the profile of the projects from the BMBF framework programme for the promotion of empirical educational research, to secure their data and to make them accessible as far as possible.

BMBF framework programme

The project partners were the DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education, GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences and the IQB – Institute for Quality Development in Education.

Second funding phase from 2016 to 2019

From 2016, the existing services were expanded to include educational research data stocks outside the BMBF framework programme for empirical educational research. In addition, collaborations were established with other institutions and research data centres to make educational research data accessible. The information, training and advice on research data management have been greatly expanded due to high demand.

Expansion phase from 2019 to 2021

The aim of permanently establishing the structures that had been created was realised in the expansion phase that began in 2019. The services provided by the FDB Network and the available data stocks were further expanded and more widely publicised.

Project advisory board

Over the years of project work, the FDB Network was supported by the expertise of a scientific project advisory board.
