Research Data Centres for Educational Research

A number of research data centres (RDC) and research institutes are offering research data and services to educational researchers:

ApaeK, Goethe-University Frankfurt  

ApaeK, Archiv für pädagogische Kasuistik (German for Archive for Pedagogical Casuistry), offers documents from pedagogical practice. The archive database holds lesson transcripts, image documents, interviews, lesson descriptions, case reconstructions and many more items.

DAS - Data Archive for the Social Sciences, GESIS, Cologne  

The Data Archive for the Social Sciences at GESIS offers the data catalogue DBK which provides access to studies – also relevant for educational research.

GESIS is a partner in submitting the project proposal for VerbundFDB, which runs this website.

The Data Archive "Kindheit und Jugend im urbanen Wandel" (German for Childhood and Youth in Urban Change)   at the Methodenzentrum Qualitative Bildungsforschung (MzQB), University of Duisburg-Essen

The data archive is currently under construction. It holds material from qualitative studies - from research on childhood and youth, assessed since the 1970s.

DIZ at DIE - German Institute for Adult Education, Bonn  

The Data and Information Centre (DIZ) at the DIE - Leibniz Institute for Lifelong Learning offers different infrastructural services in the field of adult education, i.e. further training statistics, the research map Erwachsenenbildung/Weiterbildung, publishing outlets and historical research on adult education an programmes.

The Research Data Centre at the Federal Institute of Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) provides the institute’s own data for scientific use. In particular, this concerns quantitative survey data.

RDC for Education at DIPF, Frankfurt (Main)  

The Research Data Centre for Education at DIPF offers qualitative data, particularly audio and video data from school and instructional research, and instruments (scales, tests).

The RDC for Education is a partner in submitting the project proposal VerbundFDB, which runs this website.

The Research Data Centre at the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) is under construction. It particularly holds the institute’s own data from the area of university and science research.

RDC at IAB, Federal Employmen Agency, Nuremberg  

The Research Data Centre (FDZ) of the Federal Employment Agency at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) prepares process-generated data of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) and makes them available for scientific research, together with data from IAB surveys.

The Research Data Centre at the Institute for Educational Quality Improvement (IQB) offers access to educational research studies, e.g. PISA, IGLU and IQB comparisons across federal states.

The Research Data Centre for the Socio-Economic Panel holds responsible for offering research data from the longitudinal assessment SOEP, which since 1984 has assessed around 30,000 individuals from around 11,000 households in Germany.

LIfBi, Bamberg 

The Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIFBi) holds responsible for the National Education Panel Study (NEPS). The institute additionally provides further – mostly quantitative – longitudinal studies for educational research.

The research data centre Qualiservice holds qualitative data with a focus on interview transcripts.

FD-LEX at the Mercator Institut for Literacy and Language Education, Cologne  

FD-LEX offers educational researchers access to more than 5,000 texts written by fifth and ninth year students from comprehensive schools and grammar schools in Cologne and Hannover. The researchers can use transcripts and handwritten original manuscripts for their own research projects, together with anonymized metadata of the students.

Archive "Deutsches Gedächtnis", Germany's State Distance-Learning University in Hagen

The archive holds witness interviews for contemporary historical projects at the Institute for History and Biographical Research at the FernUniversität in Hagen. It also contains documents from external researchers across diverse disciplines, such as biographical interviews and written testimonials - autobiographies, family chronicles, diaries and collections of letters.

Research Data Centres in the area of Cultural Science and Humanities

CLARIN-D offers cultural scientists and researchers in the humanities a research infrastructure with services for language corpora and tools for analysing such data. CLARIN-D moreover provides a list of participating research data centres for data archiving.
